A study by theUniversity of Udine published in Genome Biology claims to have discoveredthe switch to turn off the replication of cancer cells. This discovery isvery important for researchers as it will allow them to develop promising and targeted therapeutic approaches aimed at attacking cancer cells. The research identified a new epigenetic regulator, in addition to those already known. Then, using genome modification techniques and performing epigenomic mapping, the scientists demonstratedhow to activate the senescence program. Senescence is that set of biological phenomena that leads to a slow and progressive degradation of the cells in our body, due to the natural aging processes, but it is also a defense mechanism of the cell in the face of DNA mutations, sending the cell into proliferative arrest ahead of time and thus preventing it from developing into a tumor.
